News release

A 33-year-old man was arrested for drug-impaired driving and a 34-year-old passenger was ticketed for having open cannabis following a traffic stop conducted in Holyrood on February 22, 2021.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., an off-duty RCMP officer was traveling behind a truck that was towing a snowmobile trailer and noted a strong smell of Marihuana coming from the vehicle. The officer reported the information to the Holyrood Detachment. Police located the truck and trailer a few minutes later in Holyrood and conducted a traffic stop.

A strong smell of Marihuana was coming from inside the truck and open cannabis was observed inside. The investigation revealed that the cannabis belonged to an occupant of the truck who was issued a ticket under the Provincial Cannabis Control Act.

The driver was suspected to be impaired by a drug and completed roadside sobriety testing. The results of the tests showed further signs of impairment and the man was arrested. He was transported to the detachment where he completed a drug influence evaluation. Officers await the results of the testing to determine if charges of drug impaired driving are appropriate.

The driver was issued a driver's licence suspension and the truck was seized and impounded.
