Heavy RCMP presence in Frog Lake – Update # 1

RCMP continue to investigate this incident. The heavy police presence has ended; however, some officers remain in the area.

On Dec. 13, 2021, at approximately 11:51 a.m., Bonnyville RCMP responded to a break and enter in progress where a homeowner interrupted suspects who then pointed a gun at him. The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle that was later located by police. Police attempted to stop the suspect vehicle; however, it failed to stop for police.

A tire deflation device was successfully deployed near Frog Lake Cree Nation, Alta., which resulted in the suspects abandoning the vehicle, a car, and fleeing into a nearby field. Efforts to contain the suspects and locate them were undertaken with additional resources being deployed.

RCMP resources from Bonnyville, Kitscoty, Elk Point and Cold Lake Detachments, St. Paul RCMP Traffic Services, Alberta RCMP Emergency Response Team, Alberta RCMP Explosive Disposal Unit (for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle reconnaissance), St. Paul and Cold Lake RCMP Police Dog Services, Alberta RCMP Graphic Services and Saskatchewan RCMP officers from Onion Lake, Sask. responded to this incident.

The school in Frog Lake Cree Nation, Alta. was in a hold and secure state until approximately 5:30 p.m. RCMP resources supervised the evacuation and loading of buses as students and staff were relocated to the Frog Lake Cree Nation Band Office where reunification with family took place.

The strong police presence scaled down with the departure of RCMP Emergency Response Team at approximately 6 p.m.

During the investigation, a firearm was recovered as well as other evidence. A 25-year-old female was arrested and remains in custody.

The school in Frog Lake Cree Nation, Alta. is open today, and the community does not have any restrictions.

Heavy RCMP presence in Frog Lake

RCMP are advising residents of Frog Lake of heavy police presence as they search for suspects from a stolen vehicle following a break and enter in progress. The investigation resulted in a suspect vehicle that failed to stop for police that fled into the Frog Lake area. Suspects may be armed.

The school is in a hold and secure status as police search the community.

RCMP are asking the public to refrain from posting photos and video on social media.

No further details will be made available until the situation has been resolved.
