Channel Port Aux Basques RCMP arrests two impaired drivers over the weekend

Two men were arrested for impaired driving following traffic stops by Channel-Port aux Basques RCMP over this past weekend.

On August 20, 2021, at approximately 9:40 p.m., police were on patrol in Port Aux Basques and observed a vehicle driving erratically on Main Street. While officers attempted to stop the car, it struck a parked vehicle. The driver, a 68-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples that were two and a half times the legal limit. The man was later released from custody and is set to appear in court at a later date. His driver's licence was suspended and the car was seized and impounded.

On August 21, at approximately 3:30 p.m., police received a report of a suspected impaired driver near the Grand Bay West Beach in Port aux Basques. Officers attended and located the described vehicle. The driver, a 44-year-old man, showed signs of alcohol impairment and was arrested for impaired driving. He was transported to the detachment where he provided breath samples that were more than four times the legal limit. Due to the high blood alcohol concentration, the man was transported to the Dr. Charles L. Legrow Health Centre in Port aux Basques for a medical assessment. He was later released from police custody and is set to attend court at a future date to face charges of impaired driving. His driver's licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.
