June 21, 2021
Edmonton, Alberta

News release

This year, June 21st marks the 25th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day which recognizes and celebrates the unique heritage, diverse cultures and contributions of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. June 21 is significant as it corresponds with the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and many Indigenous Peoples and communities have celebrated their culture and heritage on or near to this day for generations.

In many communities, this day also turns into a weeklong celebration of Indigenous Peoples and culture. This week, the Alberta RCMP is planning some activities to pay tribute to the many contributions of Indigenous peoples, educate our staff and recognize our commitment and journey as a community to reconciliation. During the week, there will be an unveiling of a plaque at Alberta RCMP headquarters in honour of Treaty 6 Land Acknowledgment, a virtual Metis performance and presentation on First Nations history for staff, a blessing and welcome ceremony for the new Alberta RCMP Eagle staff, and a presentation by Dr. Wilton Littlechild about Residential schools and Reconciliation to our senior leadership.

"Our work with, and for, Indigenous communities is important to us. We recognize the significance and honour of being on Treaty 6 Land during this special 25th anniversary and week celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day. It is our goal to keep listening and continue our open dialogue and collaboration as we celebrate the culture, heritage, and value of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta."

- Deputy Commissioner Curtis Zablocki, Commanding Officer of Alberta RCMP
