Fort McMurray, Alberta

News release

On Oct. 15, 2021, at approximately 5:35 a.m., Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to a call reporting a male displaying erratic behaviour with an edged weapon at the Fort McMurray International Airport.

Upon police arrival, an interaction occurred resulting in a police officer discharging their service firearm. Emergency Medical Services attended the scene. The male was transported to hospital.

The Director of Law Enforcement was notified, and the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.

This incident leading up to the discharge of the member's service weapon is still under investigation with Wood Buffalo RCMP.

The RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts, and it's important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent and defendable.

The RCMP's internal review process, in conjunction with the ASIRT process, has been implemented to gather a full account of what took place during this incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member's duty status will be subject to review. The RCMP is, of course, fully cooperating with ASIRT and will not be commenting further on this incident. All media inquiries about this incident should now be directed to ASIRT at 780-641-9099.
