Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit investigate homicide in Peace River

On Sept. 12, 2021, at 12:51 p.m., Peace Regional RCMP received a report of a male who had arrived at the Emergency Medical Services Station in Cadotte Lake, Alta. suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim was transported to hospital in Grande Prairie, Alta. via STARS where he later succumbed to his injuries and died.

Peace Regional RCMP's investigation into this incident determined the shooting took place at a residence on Cadotte Lake in the Woodland Cree First Nation. The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit (MCU) was deployed to take over carriage of the investigation.

On Sept. 14, 2021, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit arrested and charged a 31-year-old male of Cadotte Lake for the first-degree murder of Keith Carifelle (34) of Cadotte Lake. Both males were known to each other.

Following a judicial hearing, the 31-year-old male was remanded to custody and is scheduled to appear in Peace River Provincial Court on Sept. 27, 2021.

An autopsy was conducted by the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on Sept. 16, 2021.

As these matters are now before the courts, no further information will be provided.
