Yellowknife RCMP locate and arrest prisoner who escaped lawful custody

A prisoner is facing a charge of Escape Lawful Custody after she escaped while being escorted by RCMP.

At approximately 11:10 pm, Yellowknife RCMP were escorting a woman in custody back to Yellowknife detachment, after she received medical treatment at Stanton Territorial Hospital.

While exiting the hospital, the woman escaped custody.

Additional Yellowknife Detachment members, and the NT RCMP Police Dog Services, were called immediately to assist. A containment of the area was setup and a search conducted, with no sighting of the woman. The search area was extended to other parts of the city, including downtown.

At approximately 1:45 am, on Wednesday May 20th, 2020, Yellowknife RCMP observed the woman downtown. The NT RCMP Police Dog Services searched an area in the vicinity of 52 Street, and located the woman hiding in a yard.

She was arrested and brought back to the hospital for medical treatment of a non-life threatening injury sustained while being engaged by Police Dog Services during her arrest. She was later transported back to Yellowknife detachment.

Maiya Klengenberg, 18 year-old of Yellowknife, has been charged with Escape Lawful Custody, sec 145(1) cc.

She is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 21st, 2020.

Yellowknife Detachment has initiated an incident review of the matter.
