Whitehorse RCMP and EMS respond to medical emergency; discover loaded firearms

In the early morning hours of August 28, 2020, Whitehorse RCMP received a report of a man in a vehicle who was in medical distress. RCMP and EMS attended and began treatment.

While treating him, an illegally modified shotgun was observed in his vehicle. This weapon was loaded, contrary to Canadian law. Further investigation lead to the discovery of a second shotgun that was also loaded, as well as ammunition.

Leonard McGinnis was arrested and is charged with the following under the Criminal Code:

  • Two counts of Weapons Possession Contrary to Court Order;
  • Breach Undertaking;
  • Two counts of Careless use of a Firearm;
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Device;
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle;
  • Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition.

Mr. McGinnis was already prohibited from owning any firearms prior to police actions. Mr. McGinnis appeared in court and has been held in custody until his next court appearance on September 16, 2020.
