Marystown, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

On August 20, 2020, a significant fire at the scrapyard of Rene's Autobody on Main Street in Burin was quickly contained and is not believed to be suspicious in nature.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., Burin Peninsula RCMP responded to the report of the fire. Also on scene were the Burin, Marystown, Winterland and Garnish Fire Departments; Provincial Fire Services; a water bomber, Newfoundland Power and Emergency Health Services. Due to the severity of the fire and the toxic and volatile nature of the combustible material present, businesses and dwellings in the immediate area were evacuated temporarily and Burin Peninsula Health Centre activated its evacuation plan; however, no evacuation of the hospital was required.

There were no injuries. Damage was primarily contained to the scrapyard of the business. RCMP NL thanks all the partner agencies for their professionalism and quick action in getting the fire under control and the local businesses and residents for their cooperation.
