On July 12 just before 9 p.m., a member of the RCMP's Northeast Traffic Services in Cape Breton was on the side of the road, monitoring traffic when he noted a truck approaching the police vehicle from behind. The truck was travelling at a very high rate of speed and by the time it passed the marked police vehicle, its speed was locked at 108 km/hr in an 80 km/hr zone. He stopped the vehicle.
The RCMP officer noted signs of impairment on the driver and screened him for alcohol impairment, which he failed. During the test, another driver pulled over and thanked the RCMP officer for getting this driver off the road. The driver was found to be the subject of a recognizance, and was in breach of the conditions. He was arrested and taken back to the detachment for a breath test, and once that was complete his readings were found to be over the legal limit.
The 66-year-old driver from Eskasoni is facing charges of Impaired Operation of a Conveyance, Operating a Conveyance While Over 80 mg%, and two counts of Breach of Recognizance, all under the Criminal Code. He was also charged for Speeding under the Provincial Motor Vehicle Act. He is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on September 1.
