An 18-year-old male has been charged in relation to the homicide that occurred on January 31, 2020, on the Star Blanket First Nation. The male was arrested shortly after a 17-year-old male was located deceased in his residence after a report of an altercation.

Shauntay Keewatin of the Star Blanket First Nation has been charged with Second Degree Murder, contrary to Sec. 235(1) of the Criminal Code. He will make his first court appearance in Fort Qu'Appelle Provincial Court on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.

At the request of the family, the name of the deceased will not be released.

Saskatchewan RCMP assists File Hills First Nations Police Service with homicide investigation

On January 31, 2020 at approximately 8:35 p.m., the Saskatchewan RCMP Dispatch Centre received a report of an altercation in a residence on the Star Blanket First Nation.

Officers from the File Hills Police Service responded and inside the residence located a deceased male. File Hills Police Service requested Saskatchewan RCMP assistance.

The Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crimes Unit - South immediately responded to the scene and continues to assist with investigating what has been determined to be a homicide.

The deceased male has been identified as a 17-year-old male who resided where the altercation occurred.

Due to the ongoing homicide investigation, residents of the Star Blanket First Nation will see an increased police presence for the next several hours. There is no risk to public safety.

The investigation continues with the assistance of several specialized RCMP units, the File Hills Police Service, the Fort Qu'Appelle RCMP, and the Saskatchewan Coroner's Service. An autopsy has been ordered for Tuesday, February 4, 2020 in Saskatoon.
