RCMP Traffic Services West seized a car and an ATV following traffic stops on the Hansen Highway on November 7, 2020.

RCMP Traffic Services West seized a car and an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) following traffic stops conducted on the Hansen Highway on November 7, 2020.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, an officer was on patrol and observed a car travelling at a high rate of speed. Radar readings showed the vehicle's speed as 110 km/hr in a 50 km/hr zone. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 20-year-old Stephenville man, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding more than 51 km/hr. His driver's licence was suspended and the car was seized and impounded.

A short while later, at approximately 3:40 p.m., while the officer was concluding the traffic stop involving the speeding car, he observed an ATV travelling on the Hansen Highway towards Stephenville. The officer walked out onto the road and flagged down the driver. The ATV pulled over to the side of the road and the driver, a 55-year-old Stephenville man, who was operating on the roadway, was also found to have no insurance. The man was charged under the Motorized Snow Vehicles and All Terrain Vehicles Regulations and the ATV was seized and impounded.

RCMP NL continues enforcement of excessive speeds and warns motorists of the dangers they place themselves and others in while driving in this manner.
