News release

RCMP across Prince Edward Island are working to support the Provincial Government in their efforts to enforce compliance of the orders set out by the Chief Health Officer, Dr. Heather Morrison. Non-compliance to the directions that have been clearly stated will result in fines. The key message is not the amount of money a person will have to pay for a fine for not obeying the orders - it is the disregard for the health of others and the risk that these individuals put everyone in by not following instructions.

Commanding Officer of P.E.I. RCMP, Chief Superintendent Jennifer Ebert noted, "We're urging all Islanders to stay home, and abide by Public Health orders and recommendations of Dr. Morrison. If you must leave your home, abide by social distancing and other health recommendations. Compliance will save lives. Do your part; stop the spread."

Gatherings of more than five people will result in fines. Dr. Morrison has clearly stated that it is crucial during this time that Islanders continue to self-isolate following travel, stay home as much as possible, and practice physical distancing when going out for essential reasons. Written warnings or fines for violating the Public Health Order have been issued for those in non-compliance. These individuals are putting the pubic at risk. Fines for individuals start at $1,000 and go up for subsequent offences. Repeat offenders may be held in custody.

The message has been clear and it's time for everyone to do their part to stop the spread of this dangerous virus. As ordered, do not gather in groups of more than 5 people and where a two (2) metre distance is not possible. Make sure you understand what social distancing means. There is an abundance of information on the P.E.I. Provincial Government website and briefings provided daily to keep Islanders informed and safe. We're urging everyone now to do their part and follow the instructions provided by Dr. Morrison.
