News release

Deer Lake RCMP is continuing to investigate a report of shots fired yesterday at a residence in Deer Lake. One man was safely taken into custody.

Just after 12:00 p.m. yesterday, Deer Lake RCMP responded to a report of shots fired on a residential property on Willow Place. RCMP officers from Deer Lake, Corner Brook and Rocky Harbour detachments, as well as Police Dog Services West, attended the scene and set up a safety perimeter and access to the area was blocked off. An extended perimeter was set up with assistance from Deer Lake volunteer firefighters and a municipal by-law officer from the Town of Deer Lake.

Police determined that a 47-year-old man, who was experiencing a mental health crisis, discharged two shots within a garage located on the property. He entered a neighbouring garage with the firearm and refused to exit. Officers continued to communicate with him.

Crisis negotiators attended the scene and the RCMP Emergency Response Team was engaged.

At approximately 4:30 p.m., after lengthy negotiations initiated by the RCMP, the man surrendered himself to police and exited the garage. He was safely taken into custody without incident or injury and was transported to Western Memorial Regional Hospital in Corner Brook for mental health treatment.

The investigation is continuing.

RCMP NL thanks all those who assisted police during this incident and thanks residents for their patience and cooperation.
