Three drivers stopped at different times and locations on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH) yesterday for excessive speeding face a fine of more than $500.00 each and will need to find alternative means of transportation after their licences were suspended and their vehicles were impounded by police.

At approximately 9:00 a.m., RCMP Traffic Services Central observed a vehicle west of Clarenville travelling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle's speed was displayed on the radar as 158 km/hr. The driver, a 33-year-old woman, was ticketed, her driver's licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

At approximately 3:00 p.m., an officer with RCMP Traffic Services West was parked on the side of the TCH near Hampden Junction. The officer observed a vehicle coming towards the back of the patrol car at a high rate of speed and obtained a radar reading of 161 km/hr. The driver, a 47-year-old White Bay man was ticketed, his driver's licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

At approximately 3:45 p.m., Glovertown RCMP was on patrol between Gambo and Glovertown and observed a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle's speed was displayed on the radar as 155 km/hr. The driver, a 30-year-old Fogo man, was ticketed, his driver's licence was suspended and the vehicle was seized and impounded.

Travelling at high speeds puts everyone at unnecessary risk. RCMP NL continues enforcement efforts of aggressive drivers to promote road safety. Drivers can expect to be issued traffic fines, licence suspensions and to have their vehicle impounded for speeds more than 51 kms/hr above the posted speed limit. In addition to the traffic fine and increased insurance rates, the driver will be responsible for the cost of the tow and all daily impoundment fees.

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
