On August 8, 2020, at approximately 2:40 pm, Norway House RCMP received a report of a possible impaired driver in the community. A description of the suspect vehicle was provided which officers quickly located and observed driving dangerously.
The suspect vehicle turned onto a dead end street and immediately came to a stop. Five occupants were then seen exiting the vehicle with four of them fleeing into the surrounding wooded area, whereas the driver remained with the vehicle.
The 48-year-old male was placed under arrest for impaired driving and immediately refused to cooperate with the officer. The accused grabbed the officer by the vest and both went to the ground where the accused then grabbed her radio mic in an attempt to prevent her from calling for backup.
Norway House First Nation Safety Officer's, who were driving by, witnessed what was taking place and stopped to provide assistance in gaining control of the accused who was subsequently handcuffed and placed into the police vehicle. During the arrest, the accused continued to resist arrest and uttered threats towards the officers.
Minor injuries were sustained by both the responding officer, one of the FNSO's and the accused.
The accused was later released for a court date scheduled November 4, 2020, and will face charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, Refusing to Provide a Breath Sample, Uttering Threats and Mischief Under $5000.
Norway House RCMP continue to investigate.
