Kinngait man saved by quick reaction

On the evening of June 30, 2020, Kinngait RCMP received a report of an intoxicated and distressed man who had deliberately jumped into the frigid waters near the community. Police immediately attended and made contact with the man who appeared to be in crisis and needing help.

Recognizing the situation and the urgent need to act, Police were able to de-escalate the situation with the support of the Kinngait Fire Department and successfully brought the man back to shore, saving his life. The man was quickly transported to the health centre and treated for both hypothermia and his mental health crisis.

Police would like to thank the Kinngait Fire Department, whose actions were instrumental in assisting the Kinngait RCMP by playing a critical role in safely resolving the situation.

"The situation could have easily turned tragic if it weren't for the quick actions and training of first responders," said Corporal Jamie Savikataaq.
