Illegal cigarettes seized during search of business

On July 17, members of the Yarmouth/Clare RCMP Street Crime Enforcement Unit (SCEU), members of Yarmouth Rural Detachment and Nova Scotia RCMP's Southwest Nova Traffic Services, along with members of Service Nova Scotia and Internal Services (Audit and Enforcement) arrested two Yarmouth County men following the search of an antique shop. The two men were arrested during a traffic stop, which followed an ongoing investigation into the selling of illegal tobacco products. The search resulted in the seizure of 100,000 illegal cigarettes and a quantity of cash.

Rick Dale Newell, 60, of Port Maitland and Cecil Thomas Downey, 49, of Melbourne, are both charged with Possession of Unstamped Tobacco, Selling of Unstamped Tobacco Products and charges under the Revenue Act.

Both were released from police custody and are scheduled to appear in Yarmouth Provincial Court on September 28.
