News release

At approximately 10:00 a.m. on December 31, 2019, Hopedale RCMP received a report of a missing 39-year-old woman from Hopedale. She was last seen heading on the sea ice on her snowmobile around 9:00 a.m. the previous morning.

RCMP and local Ground Search and Rescue responded. The woman's body was located approximately 1:30 p.m. on the sea ice about 4.5 km outside Hopedale. Her snowmobile was partially submerged.

The RCMP urges the public not to venture on to ice-covered bodies of water unless the appropriate safety checks for thickness of the ice have taken place. Even then, the public should proceed with caution as many variables, including temperature, winds and water currents can impact the safety of the ice surface. No open body of water covered with ice can ever be considered completely safe.
