Happy Valley-Goose Bay man charged with number of offences including forcible confinement

Following an incident last night, Happy Valley-Goose Bay RCMP arrested and charged 30-year-old Johnathan Newman of Happy Valley-Goose Bay with a number of charges, including forcible confinement.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of an injured woman who jumped out of a moving truck to escape a man and was partially run over. Police attended the scene and learned that the woman was forced into the truck by the man and was also threatened with the use of a weapon. She was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Johnathan Newman was arrested not far from his residence and was found in possession of a quantity of cocaine and cash.

Police executed a search warrant at a garage located on Newman's property and located and seized a collapsible baton.

Newman is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Forcible Confinement
  • Uttering Threats
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking

He also faces a charge under the Highway Traffic Act for operating a vehicle while suspended.

Newman was held in custody overnight and attends court today. The investigation is continuing.
