News release

A 51-year-old Dover man was taken to hospital with serious injuries following a roll-over collision of his all-terrain vehicle (ATV) on June 4, 2020.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., Glovertown RCMP received the report of a single-vehicle ATV collision at the intersection of Route 320 and Wellington Road in Dover. According to witnesses, the ATV entered onto the roadway at a high rate of speed, lost control and flipped over.

The driver, who was pinned underneath the ATV, wore a helmet that came off during the collision. Fire and ambulance crews arrived and assisted in removing the man from underneath the ATV. He was transported to hospital prior to police arrival.

A number of witnesses to the incident provided police with information about the collision. Evidence gathered at the scene suggests speed and driving without due care and attention as contributing factors in this collision.

The man had a suspended driver's licence and was unlawfully operating the ATV on the road. The ATV, which had no registration plates attached, was seized and impounded.

The ATV operator remains in hospital at this time. The investigation is continuing to determine if alcohol was a factor.

RCMP NL cautions ATV enthusiasts to drive with safety in mind and to follow the legislation of all-terrain vehicle use as outlined in the Motorized Snow Vehicles and All-Terrain Vehicles Act.
