Fuel truck avoids collision with moose; slides into ditch near Pelly Crossing

January 28, 2020
Pelly Crossing, Yukon

News release

A semi truck carrying approximately 48,000 litres of fuel was reportedly heading north on the North Klondike Highway and attempted to avoid a collision with a moose. Due to the steep grade and icy/snowy conditions the driver was unable to stop and went into the ditch. There were no injuries in the collision.

Pelly Crossing RCMP were called to the collision on January 25, 2020 and set up a perimeter as the fuel trailer was leaking diesel at a consistent rate. The fuel leakage was stopped with approximately 2,000L of fuel being spilled onto the ground. Environment Yukon attended and obtained ground samples, and the clean-up is being coordinated with assistance from an Environmental Protection Officer.

The Stewart Crossing Highway Department as well as the Mayo Highway Department remained on scene for traffic control while the truck was removed. The highway is now cleared and no more delays are expected.
