Ferryland RCMP is warning of a new scam involving businesses who sell pre-paid Visa cards following a report from a convenience store in Witless Bay on June 2, 2020.
On May 27, 2020, the scammer called the store identifying himself by a name and stated he was calling from corporate operations. The scammer told the cashier there was a virus within the Atlantic region pre-paid system and provided information including codes that was convincing of his knowledge of the system. The cashier followed the directions the scammer provided through a number of phone calls over the next few days. Over $5200.00 was cashed in from the activation of the pre-paid Visa cards.
The investigation is continuing.
