Elk Point RCMP arrest two after report of shots fired

On April 8, 2020 at approximately 11:18 a.m., Elk Point RCMP responded to a report of a drive by shooting in Frog Lake.

Elk Point with assistance from the Bonnyville and Cold Lake RCMP Detachments, Eastern Alberta District Rural Crime Reduction Unit and RCMP Police Dog Services, quickly located and arrested two suspects.

It is alleged that a vehicle being driven by the victim was travelling on Highway 897 when an SUV driving behind waved it down. The victim pulled over and several shots were fired at their vehicle. The victim was able to flee the area in their vehicle. No one was injured.

The suspect vehicle was located by police at a residence in Frog Lake. A male who was inside the vehicle immediately fled on foot before being tracked down by RCMP Police Dog Services. Both the suspect male that fled and a female who remained inside the vehicle were taken into custody without incident.

Police seized what is believed to be crystal methamphetamine (26g), a loaded rifle and a small amount of Canadian currency. The SUV used in the offence was also reported stolen from Edmonton.

A 21-year-old female of Cold Lake and a 36-year-old male of Saddle Lake were jointly charged with:

  • Discharge of a firearm with intent
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Possession of firearm in a motor vehicle
  • Possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes
  • Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of a controlled substance
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime less than $5000

The male was also charged with possession of a firearm when knowing possession is unauthorized, operation while prohibited and obstruction of a peace officer.

He was remanded into custody and will be appearing in Lac La Biche provincial court via CCTV. The female was released after a judicial hearing and is set to appear in St. Paul provincial court on June 25, 2020.
