Crime Reduction Unit round-up: May 27th to June 3rd 2020

On May 27th, 2020, the Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) arrested two individuals for trafficking drugs.

Police seized the following upon search of the individuals and the vehicle they were in possession of:

  • Two cell phones;
  • An amount of suspected crack cocaine;
  • Cash.

Joey Vaneltsi, 36, and Trisha James, 32, were released on undertakings to appear in Territorial Court on July 28th, 2020.

Vaneltsi is charged with Trafficking Cocaine, Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) and Breach of Probation under the Criminal Code.

James is charged with Trafficking Cocaine and Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking under the CDSA.

CRU executed a search warrant on May 29th, 2020 on Pine Street in Whitehorse with the assistance of Whitehorse Detachment and the Yukon RCMP Critical Incident Program.

Upon searching the residence, police seized:

  • An amount of suspected cocaine hydrochloride and crack cocaine;
  • An amount of suspected heroin;
  • An amount of suspected fentanyl;
  • An amount of suspected marihuana;
  • An amount of suspected methamphetamine;
  • A large sum of cash;
  • Drug paraphernalia;
  • Cell phones.

Michael Bland, 39, Michelle Cavanagh, 44, Calvin Pavey, 46, Taylor Leclerc, 27, and Jesse Monteith, 19, are charged with the following under the CDSA and the Cannabis Act:

  • Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Possession of heroin for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Possession of fentanyl for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking;
  • Unlawfully possess cannabis for the purpose of selling it.

Michael Bland is also charged with two counts of:

  • Fail, without lawful excuse, to comply with a condition of a recognizance contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code.

Taylor Leclerc is also charged with:

  • Fail, without lawful excuse, to comply with a condition of a recognizance contrary to section 145(5)(a) of the Criminal Code.

All individuals arrested were held for court. Cavanagh was held but has since been released on conditions. Leclerc and Monteith will appear in court on June 4th, 2020 and Bland will appear on June 17th, 2020. An appearance date has not yet been set for Pavey.
