CRCC Review of the RCMP’s Policies and Procedures Regarding Strip Searches

Yesterday the Civilian Review and Complaints Commission (CRCC) publically released a report regarding their national review of the RCMP's Policies and Procedures on Strip Searches. The RCMP welcome the report and the information, which supports our need to improve the handling of persons detained and engaging in what, is defined as a strip search.

The RCMP in Nunavut have taken steps to address the findings and recommendations of the CRCC report. These include:

Updated best practices and procedures regarding strip searches, ensuring adequate supervision and documentation in compliance with jurisprudence.

A method to track such searches to ensure compliance.

In July 2020, the RCMP online course "Using a Trauma Informed Approach" became mandatory for all RCMP members in Nunavut.

To provide training in mental health first aid with an Inuit-specific context to all members new to the division.

"We continue to work to help ensure persons who are detained are treated with respect and dignity, in compliance with the law, while helping our members to better support those in need as it relates to addictions, mental health, self-harm and vulnerable persons." said the Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Nunavut, C/Supt. Amanda Jones.
