Cold Lake RCMP investigate suspicious death - Update 3

The RCMP Major Crimes Unit have charged two after the shooting of an adult male on Aug. 9, 2020 in a parking lot of a gas station on Highway 28 in Cold Lake.

A 25-year-old male of Elizabeth Metis Settlement and a 17-year-old male youth, who cannot be named as per the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, have been charged with second degree murder in the death of Kevin Evans (41) of Elizabeth Metis Settlement.

He is set to appear in Cold Lake provincial court via CCTV on Aug. 19, 2020. The youth is set to appear in St. Paul provincial youth court on Aug. 26, 2020.

The two other persons who were detained in relation to this incident were not formally charged. The 2018 Black Nissan Murrano has also been recovered, and police are not seeking any other suspects.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be released.

Cold Lake RCMP investigate suspicious death - Update 2

A male suspect in relation to this investigation was arrested and taken into custody this morning at approximately 3:00 a.m., near Highway 28 and Range Road 130 by RCMP Police Dog Services and officers that responded to the area.

Home owners in the area around Bonnie Lake northeast of Vilna are no longer asked to remain in their home as it is now safe.

An update will be provided when available.

Cold Lake RCMP investigate suspicious death - Update 1

Smoky Lake, Boyle, Redwater and St. Paul RCMP are collaborating their efforts and have the Bonnie Lake area, 4 kilometres northeast of Vilna, Alta., along Highway 28 contained and are asking that the public stay away from that area.

The golf course has been evacuated and one male suspect is remaining at large. There is a heavy police presence and the RCMP are asking the public to remain in their home and call 911 if they see any suspicious activity.

This is resulting from an ongoing suspicious death investigation, three suspects are in police custody and one remaining Indigenous adult male armed suspect is believed to be at large in that area. He is believed to be in his mid-20's, around 5'11" and approximately 140 lbs.

Homeowners in the Bonnie Lake area need to be aware of this situation and the public needs to avoid the area.

Cold Lake RCMP investigate suspicious death

Cold Lake RCMP and RCMP Major Crimes Unit are investigating after an adult male was located deceased at the Petro Canada Gas Station on Highway 28 in Cold Lake.

On Aug. 9, 2020, at approximately 1:00 a.m., RCMP were dispatched to a report that a male had been shot in the parking lot of the Petro Canada. Four suspect left the area and police are looking for a stolen 2018 black Nissan Murano bearing Alberta licence plate BRW 5433 which was last seen on the Cold Lake First Nations this morning.

The investigation continues. An autopsy has been scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 13, 2020 at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Edmonton.
