Clarenville RCMP apprehends impaired driver traveling 53 km/h above the posted speed limit

A 45-year-old resident of Mt. Pearl, who was operating a vehicle traveling 53 km/hr above the posted speed limit, was arrested for impaired driving by Clarenville RCMP on July 29, 2020.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Clarenville RCMP was on patrol on the Trans-Canada Highway near Sunnyside and observed a car traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer activated the radar and obtained the speed of the vehicle as 153 km/hr. A traffic stop was conducted in the town of Sunnyside and the driver was suspected to be impaired by alcohol. He failed a roadside breath test, was arrested for impaired driving and was transported to Clarenville Detachment.

The driver was released from custody with a future court date to answer to a criminal charge of impaired driving. He was ticketed under the Highway Traffic Act for speeding, failing to stop at a stop sign, and having studded tires. Tickets were also issued under the Liquor Control Act for having open alcohol in a vehicle, and under the Cannabis Control Act for having cannabis readily available in a vehicle. His licence was suspended and the car was seized and impounded.
