On the evening of October 23, 2020 Arviat RCMP responded to an ATV collision with a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a young child, was immediately transported to the Arviat Health Centre for medical care. The child succumbed to the injuries sustained from the collision and was pronounced deceased. The driver of the ATV failed to remain at the scene of the accident and was reported to have fled.
Arviat RCMP have arrested and charged a 27-year-old Arviat man with dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing death – Section 320.13(3) CC and failing to remain at a scene of an accident – Section 320.16(3) CC as a result of this investigation. He appeared before a Justice of the Peace and was released with several conditions. His next scheduled court appearance is January 26, 2021 at the Nunavut Court of Justice in Arviat, NU.
