Burin Peninsula RCMP charges man with number of offences including threatening to shoot police

June 11, 2020
Burin, Newfoundland and Labrador

News release

After a week of being on the run from police for not abiding by his court conditions, Burin Peninsula RCMP arrested and charged 23-year-old Tristan Barrett at his residence in Burin overnight. Barrett was uncooperative with police, refused to come out of his residence and threatened to shoot police.

While officers were dealing with Mr. Barrett, an urgent call was dispatched of an alleged stabbing that occurred at a location approximately 10 kilometers away. Some of the officers departed immediately to follow up on the report of the stabbing, while others remained on scene attempting to communicate with Barrett.

After some negotiating by the officers to talk Barrett into coming out of the residence, he came outside and was taken into custody.

Police later determined that the reported stabbing had not actually occurred and that Barrett made the false report in an attempt to cause officers to leave the area so he could leave his residence undetected.

Tristen Barrett was held in custody and attends court today to face charges of uttering threats, obstruction of justice, public mischief, and 10 breaches of a court release order.

The investigation is continuing.
