Boyle RCMP on scene of three vehicle collision - Highway 55 - Update

News release

On Feb. 11, 2020 at approximately 10:37 a.m., Boyle RCMP responded to a three vehicle collision on Highway 55 east of Grassland between Township Road 674 and Range Road 190.

Preliminary investigation revealed a southbound car was attempting to pass a vehicle on Highway 55 and collided with a semi-tractor heading northbound. A separate collision then occurred with a southbound semi-tractor.

Three adult occupants of the car from Fort McMurray were pronounced deceased on scene. An additional passenger of the car and driver of the northbound semi-tractor were taken to a local hospital and then air lifted to Edmonton with serious life-threatening injuries. The driver of the southbound semi-tractor suffered minor injuries.

Speed and road conditions are believed to be factors with icy conditions, heavy snow and low visibility also being reported at the time of the collision. No charges will be laid.

Boyle RCMP along with a RCMP Collision Analyst continue to investigate. The names of the deceased will not be released.

Traffic is still being diverted around the collision scene and is anticipated for approximately two more hours.

Boyle RCMP are currently on scene of a three vehicle collision on Highway 55 east of Grassland between Township Road 674 and Range Road 190.

Traffic is currently being re-routed around the collision. Motorists should expect delays for the several hours in the area. Please slow down around all emergency personnel on scene.

Heavy blowing snow, low visibility and icy conditions are currently being reported on Highway 55 and Highway 63. Motorists are asked to drive to the conditions.

An update will be provided when available.
