News release

On Dec. 17, 2020, at 9:39 p.m., Mayerthorpe RCMP received a call of a disturbance and an assault in progress at a residence located in the area of 49 Street and 51 Avenue in Sangudo, Alta.

Mayerthorpe RCMP attended the location and a 34-year-old male was taken into custody. Emergency Medical Services attended the scene and provided first aid to a resident of the home, James Kenneth Gantz (65); however, he succumbed to his injuries and died on scene.

The circumstances of James Gantz's death warranted Alberta RCMP Major Crimes taking over carriage of this investigation. On Dec. 18, 2020, Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit charged a 34-year-old male of Sangudo with:

  • Second degree murder
  • Failure to comply with release conditions

Following a judicial interim release hearing, the 34-year-old male was remanded into custody to speak to bail and is scheduled to attend Mayerthorpe Provincial Court on Jan. 14, 2021.

An autopsy is scheduled at the Edmonton Office of the Chief Medical Examiner the week of Dec. 21, 2020.

As this matter is now before the courts, no further information will be provided.
