56-year-old man sentenced to two years in jail following investigation into images of child sexual abuse

A 56-year-old man has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to charges stemming from an investigation into images of child sexual abuse.

The investigation began in March, 2018, as a result of information received from the RCMP's National Child Exploitation Crime Centre. On November 20, 2018, a search warrant was executed at a residence in Elgin. Police seized several electronic devices and a 54-year-old man was arrested at the scene.

Gregory George Shaffer was charged with making available child pornography, possession of child pornography, and personation with intend. He was sentenced in Moncton Provincial Court on November 4, 2020. A previous charge of one count of accessing child pornography was vacated.

Gregory George Shaffer has been added to the National Sex Offender Registry for 20 years, and will be required to submit a DNA sample. Following his release from prison, he will have to abide by conditions set out by the court, including not accessing the internet.

The RCMP's Internet Child Exploitation Unit includes members of the Saint John and Kennebecasis Regional Police Forces. The RCMP's Digital Forensics Services Unit in New Brunswick, the RCMP National Child Exploitation Crime Centre along with the Sussex RCMP and Riverview RCMP, were also involved in this investigation.
