"Substance abuse and drug addiction are often one of the contributing factors when it comes to property crimes that are being committed in our rural communities," says Cst. Robert Eberly with the Eastern Alberta Rural Crime Reduction Unit (EADRCRU). "These types of investigations allow us to identify and arrest those responsible for illegal drug trafficking with the ultimate goal of disrupting criminal activity in the area."

On Dec. 18, 2018, members of the St. Paul RCMP Detachment and EADRCRU attended a residence in the Saddle Lake First Nations Reserve as part of a stolen property investigation that had been ongoing over several weeks.

Upon arriving at the residence, a suspect vehicle was located in the driveway that was believed to have fled the previous day after nearly colliding with an RCMP police vehicle.

A male who was inside the parked vehicle proceeded to flee on foot as a means of avoiding police interaction. A short foot chase ensued and the suspect was arrested without further incident.

The suspect male and vehicle were searched and police seized over 20 grams of methamphetamine along with an assortment of additional controlled substances which included codeine, temazepam, lorazepam and cocaine, Canadian currency and multiple weapons and ammunition. A stolen Dodge pickup truck from Lloydminster was also located and recovered from the property.

A 38-year-old male of Saddle Lake was arrested and charged with the following offences:

  • Possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x4)
  • Possession of a controlled substance (x2)
  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Failing to comply with conditions of a recognizance
  • Possession of a weapons or ammunition contrary to an order (x2)

He was remanded into custody after a judicial hearing and will be appearing in St. Paul Provincial Court on Jan. 17, 2019.
