News release

During the evening of December 3, 2019, members of the Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit located a male driving a vehicle with a stolen licence plate. Team members were able to safely execute the arrest of the 45-year-old male of Olds, Alberta. Schmidt was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property and several outstanding warrants.

While in custody at Olds Detachment, Schmidt was recognized as the person previously arrested under a false name on September 14 in Olds. Members on the Olds Detachment Police Mountain Bike Patrol had stopped Schmidt for a traffic violation and he provided them with false identification. He was observed to be in possession of a taser style weapon and, upon arrest, was also found in possession of what was believed to be methamphetamine. Under the name given to police at the time, he was charged and released for a court appearance on October 7. He did not appear in court and warrants were issued. He has now been charged with those offences under his legal name, as well as an additional charge of Obstructing a Peace Officer. A bail hearing was held and he was released on his own recognizance to appear in Didsbury provincial court on December 23.

The Olds RCMP are requesting anyone with information regarding these matters to contact the Olds RCMP at 403-556-3323 or should you wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or by internet at www.tipsubmit.com.
