RCMP reaching out to the public following arrest for sexual offences

The RCMP has charged a man with sexual offences following an investigation into a historical sexual assault. Police are reaching out to the public in the event there are additional victims.

The 12-month investigation determined that the victim, who was a child at the time, had been sexually assaulted by an adult man who was known to her. The incidents occurred between July 2008 and February 2010. The accused held a position in the community where he had access to youth.

John Henry Lafford, 66, of Eskasoni is charged with the following offences:

  • Sexual Assault (2 counts)
  • Sexual Exploitation of a Young Person (4 counts)
  • Invitation to Sexual Touching (2 counts)
  • Committing an Indecent Act

Lafford was arrested on December 14 without incident in Eskasoni. He appeared in court on December 16, was held in custody overnight and released by the court on conditions on December 17. He is scheduled to return to Eskasoni Provincial Court on January 21.

The RCMP is reaching out to the public in the event there may be more victims.
