On April 27, 2019, La Loche RCMP witnessed an adult male consuming alcohol while sitting on the steps outside a licensed establishment. After observing the behavior of the adult male, La Loche RCMP officers made the decision to arrest the adult male for illegal consumption and being intoxicated in a public place. The adult male resisted arrest and was taken into custody in front of several other members of the local community. He was transported to the La Loche Detachment and was lodged in La Loche RCMP cells for several hours before he complained of pain to his lower body. He was transported to La Loche Hospital and then transported to a Saskatoon hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. He was transferred back to La Loche Hospital and has since been released from care. The RCMP is unable to discuss the nature of the injuries as this is the male's personal health information.
As a result of this incident, on May 2, 2019, the Saskatchewan RCMP requested an independent investigation be conducted by the Estevan Police Service. Additionally, an independent observer has been assigned by the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice.
Members of the Saskatchewan RCMP Senior Management Team met with local officials in La Loche on May 7, 2019 to discuss concerns raised by the community as a result of this incident and will continue to keep local officials informed.
Estevan Police Service will be arriving within the next few days to start their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the adult male's injuries, including how and when the injuries occurred. Until the conclusion of the independent investigation by the Estevan Police Service, the Saskatchewan RCMP is unable to provide any further information or comments to ensure the independence of the investigation.
