On December 11, 2019, at approximately 9:00 pm, Headingley RCMP responded to a report of a vehicle that was travelling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 1, near Elie.

Officers immediately responded and while en route, they received additional reports from witnesses that the suspect vehicle, a minivan, had nearly struck several other vehicles on Highway 1.

Officers, using their emergency lights and siren, attempted to stop the vehicle, however, the vehicle failed to stop. An officer then blocked the westbound lanes of traffic with his marked police truck. The suspect vehicle did not stop and collided with the police vehicle.

The 84-year-old driver from Winnipeg, and the 44-year-old RCMP officer were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Charges against the 84-year-old driver are pending and RCMP continue to investigate.
