News release

On December 9, 2019, at approximately 5:00 p.m., an off duty RCMP officer was travelling on Veterans Memorial Highway and was tailgated by an aggressive driver who used his high beam lights in an attempt to get other drivers to allow his vehicle to pass.

The driver passed the officer's vehicle, and a number of other vehicles, at a high rate of speed. At the time of the incident, it was dark and raining.

Officers from Harbour Grace RCMP responded and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, a 38-year-old man from Carbonear, was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving without reasonable consideration for other motorists.

The RCMP is committed to improving public safety on our roadways and continues enforcement of aggressive drivers. Motorists are reminded of the dangers of driving at aggressive speeds, particularly during inclement weather, which reduces reaction times and puts others at unnecessary risk.
