The Saskatchewan RCMP is providing the following statement in response to today's announcement that no criminal charges will be laid as a result of the independent, external investigation into the death of Brydon Whitstone in October, 2017 in North Battleford.
The RCMP's internal review of the circumstances leading up to and including the death of Brydon Whitstone is also complete. That review examined whether RCMP policy and procedure was adhered to in this matter. The RCMP remains committed to advising the public of the outcome of that process and addressing the circumstances surrounding Brydon Whitstone's death. However, with a Saskatchewan Coroners Service inquest pending, we are not in a position to provide comment at this time as it is critical that we protect the integrity of the inquest.
The RCMP welcomes the coroner's inquest as it is a fact-finding process that will allow for full disclosure of the facts as they pertain to this case. During the inquest, we expect to disclose our members' role in this matter including all investigative/enforcement steps that were taken with the ultimate goal of ensuring public and officer safety during critical incidents such as this.
