Relocation

After graduation, most new members are relocated to remote parts of Canada, away from their hometown or city, and often, far from urban centers.

Before you start the program, ensure that your family is ready to move with you following your graduation to avoid having to deal with this additional stress during training.

You will find out what division or province you are being posted to during your staffing interview at week 16. By week 18 or 19, you will know at what detachment you will be working.

Preparing for change

Cadet should be prepared to relocate within days of successfully completing the training program. Relocations are subject to rules established by the Treasury Board of Canada, and must be followed accordingly. They read as follows:

  1. All relocation entitlements must first meet the “40 km Rule”. This means that relocation and travel expenses will only be covered for a member moving at least 40 km closer to the new place of duty from the pre-engagement place of residence, by the shortest usual public route. FMM 9.5.3.1.4
  2. Moves will be from the pre-engagement place of residence only (within Canada), with no second pick up location. Moves must be completed within 90 days of graduation.
  3. It is the responsibility of the newly engaged member to have their household effects ready and accessible for moving, immediately following graduation. A contracted moving company (i.e., United, Atlas or Sirva Van Lines) will be hired to pack, load, and move household effects. Therefore, prior to graduation, personal and household effects must be in order. Items being shipped should be separate from other items not being shipped.
  4. Only one primary vehicle will be driven or transported at RCMP expense.
  5. A maximum of 20,000 lbs or 9,072 kg of household effects will be moved at RCMP expense. FMM 3.4.1.1
  6. Lease penalty payments and/or legal and real estate fees to dispose of the pre-engagement place of residence will not be covered by the RCMP, nor will be any storage fees while in training.
  7. Non-admissible items include: recreational vehicles; canoes, kayaks and sailboards over 18' in length; boats; trailers exceeding 12 feet; dog houses; outdoor animal enclosures; outdoor fences; alcoholic beverages; fuel; propane tanks; restricted firearms and ammunition; livestock; pets; aircraft or ultra-lights; farm or construction equipment; building material, over 100 lbs; hobby material over 500 lbs or 225 kg; motorcycles that are not the newly engaged member’s primary vehicle.
