Qualifying Badge
The tradition of marksmen badges begins in the British Army, where they were awarded to members who won shooting competitions. In the case of the Force, these shooting prizes, which are worn on the left arm, were first awarded on June 9, 1894.
A first-place winner would be labelled the distinguished marksman and given a badge with crossed carbines or pistols and a crown worked in gold. The individual who finished second would be awarded a badge with crossed carbines or pistols, without the crown. Third-place was awarded a similar badge but embroidered in worsted. Presently, these badges are awarded for scores in shooting competitions in both rifle and pistol categories.
