What are the differences between RCMP regular members, civilian members and Public Service employees?

Regular and civilian members of the RCMP are governed by the RCMP Act; a regular member is a sworn police officer, whereas a civilian member is hired for his/her specialized scientific, technical or administrative skills. Public Service employees are hired under the Public Service Act for administrative and technical support within the Force.

Have you ever thought of a career as a police dispatcher/complaint taker? If so, an exciting career awaits you in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a Civilian Member Telecommunications Operator. Often the first point of contact for the public in emergency situations, Telecommunications Operators will also be the RCMP operational member's lifeline, sometimes the only contact for help they may have. If you like police work, enjoy an adrenaline rush within a fast-paced environment where decisions are made in seconds and time seems to fly by, this job is for you.

Your ability to multi-task in a highly technological environment of teamwork will provide you with a sense of accomplishment, knowing you have helped someone in distress. Working as a Telecommunications Operator you support front-line policing providing the operational member with up-to-date pertinent information via a computer-aided dispatch system or radio.

Whether you work in a provincial operational communication centre, a federal operational communication centre or our administrative communication centre, your performance on the job is crucial to Canada's public safety environment.
