Gaspé, Monday, October 25, 2010 – Last Wednesday, following a brief investigation, officers of the Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine RCMP Detachment searched a residence in New Richmond with the assistance of the Sûreté du Québec. Counterfeit goods, including approximately 3,500 DVDs, 400 software, 1,000 computer games and 100 music CDs, were seized on the premises.

During their search, the police also seized computer equipment that was used by the identified suspect to copy these counterfeit items for the purpose of commercial distribution.  Charges under the Criminal Code and Copyright Act could be laid against him.

The RCMP takes action and investigates this type of crime if there are grounds to believe that material has been copied for the purpose of commercial distribution, or to such an extent as to be prejudicial to the copyright holder.  Every person who copies or reproduces a DVD, software, computer game or CD for the purpose of commercial distribution or sale commits an offence under the Copyright Act.

The RCMP takes this opportunity to promote public awareness of the scourge of counterfeiting. The illegal production and sale of counterfeit goods account for losses of several million dollars annually.

As part of the Economic Integrity Program, the RCMP will pursue its efforts to fight economic crime and enhance public confidence in Canadian capital markets.  The RCMP invites consumers to make the right choices to prevent the harm caused by such criminal activity.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activity by individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine RCMP Detachment at 418-368-1611. All tips will be kept confidential.
