Saint-Jérôme, Tuesday, July 27, 2010 – Last Friday, following a short investigation, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) searched a residence in Bois-des-Filion. A total of 6,795 counterfeit DVDs and 120 counterfeit VHSs were seized. A suspect was identified and could face charges under the Criminal Code and the Copyright Act.
The individual advertised the counterfeit goods on an Internet classifieds site. During the search, officers also seized electronic equipment and computers used to reproduce the items seized.
The Copyright Act makes it an offence to copy a DVD or VHS for the purpose of distribution or sale. Intellectual property crime is mainly related to the illegal counterfeiting and sale of consumer goods or services. This type of crime affects several areas of activities: theft of satellite television signals and counterfeiting of designer clothes, popular household items and even pharmaceuticals.
The public is invited to report any information on suspected illicit activities by local individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Laurentides-Lanaudières-Outaouais Detachment at 450-431-1331. All tips will be kept confidential.
