Sept-Îles, July 13, 2010 – On July 7, following a short investigation, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police searched a residence in Sept-Îles. Based on the evidence found, the investigators were able to uncover a drug trafficking operation via courier between Sept-Îles and Montréal.

The initial search that took place on July 7 led to the arrest of a 65-year-old man and the seizure of more than five pounds of marihuana. Yesterday, the police conducted a second search as part of this investigation, this time in Montréal, which resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old man, also from Sept-Îles. The matter is still under investigation to determine the possible involvement of the two subjects in a drug trafficking ring.

Both subjects were released on a promise to appear.  They could be charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act for various offences, including drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The RCMP’s primary goal is to ensure safe homes and safe communities for Canadians.  We believe that the use of marihuana and related crimes cause harm to individuals and communities.

Illegal drug trafficking is a global phenomenon with serious economic and social effects. Drug trafficking involves a trade chain that extends far beyond local dealers:  it continues to be the principal source of revenue for organized crime groups.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by individuals or groups to the investigators of the RCMP Côte-Nord Detachment at 418-962-2061 or Info-Crime Québec at 1-800-711-1800. All tips will be treated as confidential.
