Sept-Îles, April 1, 2010 – On March 29 and 31, following a short investigation, members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Côte-Nord Detachment, searched two stores located in Sept-Îles and seized clothing items and accessories of known brand names, including Chanel, Dolce&Gabbana, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Fila. In all, the items seized represent losses estimated at $25,000 for the defrauded companies.
It should be noted that offences under the Copyright Act are investigated and entail legal implications for the offenders. In fact, all subjects involved are ultimately liable to be charged.
Intellectual property crime is mainly related to the illegal counterfeiting and sale of consumer goods or services. This type of crime affects several areas of activity: theft of satellite television signals and counterfeiting of designer clothes, popular household items and even pharmaceuticals.
The strategic objective of the Financial Integrity Program with respect to federal law enforcement is to ensure the health and safety of communities, protect the public and maintain Canada’s economic integrity.
