Counterfeit Goods Seized in Two Rivière-du-Loup Stores

Rimouski, Tuesday, November 24, 2009 – This morning, officers of the RCMP Bas St-Laurent Detachment searched two stores in Rivière-du-Loup. The officers seized a number of counterfeit clothing items and accessories bearing well-known brand name logos such as Chanel, Billabong, Volcom, Harley-Davidson and Montréal Canadiens. A man and a woman who were on the premises were also arrested. They could face charges under the Copyright Act.

Intellectual property crime is mainly related to the illegal counterfeiting and sale of consumer goods or services. This type of crime affects several areas of activities: theft of satellite television signals and counterfeiting of designer clothes, popular household items and even pharmaceuticals.

The strategic objective of the Financial Integrity Program with respect to federal law enforcement is to ensure the health and safety of communities, protect the public and maintain Canada’s economic integrity.

The RCMP encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by local individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Bas St-Laurent Detachment at 418-722-3090. All tips will be kept confidential.
