Three Million Dollar Fraud - Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel Resident Arrested

Trois-Rivières, Thursday, November 19, 2009 – Police arrested Kevin Gossellin-Robitaille, a 24-year-old Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel resident on Tuesday. The man faces two counts of fraud after filing for personal bankruptcy in April 2007. He is alleged to have, by deceit, falsehood or other fraudulent means, defrauded two groups of creditors working in the agriculture sector for an amount of nearly $3 million.

Kevin Gossellin-Robitaille allegedly posed as an influential federal official. In exchange for financial contributions, he reportedly stated that he could obtain substantial government grants to support the expansion of agriculture businesses in Western Canada.

The investigation revealed that he swindled a first couple of Bécancour out of $700,000. The suspect is believed to have used a similar scheme with another couple in the Richmond region, defrauding them of approximately $2.2 million.

The investigation also revealed that the individual pretended to have a lavish lifestyle, inviting his victims abroad in luxury hotels on several occasions. Based on the investigation, the money he used to pay for these expenses was in fact the money he received from the creditors.

The suspect appeared in court in Trois-Rivières yesterday. He is liable to imprisonment. The alleged offences occurred on a continuous basis between 2006 and 2009.

The investigation was conducted by the Québec City RCMP Commercial Crime Section. Members of the Estrie and Mauricie Sûreté du Québec Regional Investigation Bureau took part in the investigation.
