Rouyn-Noranda, November 13, 2009 – Last November 10, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Abitibi-Témiscamingue-Nouveau-Québec Detachment, in partnership with the Sûreté du Québec, searched a residence in the city of Amos. As a result of this operation, the police seized a total of 3,800 contraband cigarettes and some cash, and arrested two suspects on the premises.

The two suspects, a man and a woman, were released on a promise to appear. They could be charged with possession of tobacco products not stamped in accordance with the Excise Act, 2001.  The investigation is still ongoing and could lead to other criminal activities linked to the distribution of contraband tobacco in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

It is illegal to possess or sell tobacco products that are not packaged or stamped as required by Canadian law. In an effort to reduce demand, the RCMP uses various methods to raise public awareness of the consequences of buying contraband tobacco products. The illicit tobacco trade presents a serious and growing threat to public safety and health in Canada. People need to be aware that they are funding criminal activity when they purchase contraband tobacco products.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police encourages citizens to report any information on suspected illicit activities by individuals or groups of individuals to the investigators of the RCMP Abitibi-Témiscamingue-Nouveau-Québec Detachment at 819 797-2120 or, toll free in the region, 1 800 472-4282. All tips will be kept confidential.
